Our photo of the month for June from our archives shows one of the many well-known T-shaped pillars from G\u00f6bekli Tepe, an 11.000 year-old site located in \u015eanl\u0131urfa in south-eastern Turkey. This particular limestone monolith is one of the central pillars from Building D, one of several well preserved monumental structures at this site. Intriguingly, the T-shape of the monolith depicts the human form; while the shaft of the pillar represents the body, the top of the \u201cT\u201d is the head. This interpretation is underlined by the addition, in low relief, of arms (discernible on the broad side of the shaft) and items of clothing and bodily adornment: For example the crescent and circle visible below the head of this T-pillar individual probably belongs to a necklace.<\/p>

At the time of its discovery, the finds from G\u00f6bekli Tepe went well beyond the received view of prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies but, as so often in archaeology, presented us with far more questions than answers. Our research at G\u00f6bekli Tepe, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, is the focus of a DFG long-term funding project undertaken in cooperation with the Istanbul University and the \u015eanl\u0131urfa Museum.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ar\u015fivimizden Haziran ay\u0131 i\u00e7in se\u00e7ti\u01e7imiz bu foto\u011fraf, \u015eanl\u0131urfa’daki 11.000 y\u0131ll\u0131k bir yerle\u015fim yeri olan G\u00f6bekli Tepe’deki \u00e7ok say\u0131da tan\u0131nm\u0131\u015f T \u015feklindeki dikilita\u015flardan birini g\u00f6steriyor. Bu \u00f6zel kire\u00e7ta\u015f\u0131 monolit, alandaki birka\u00e7 iyi korunmu\u015f an\u0131tsal yap\u0131dan biri olan Bina D’nin merkezi dikilita\u015flar\u0131ndan biridir. \u015ea\u015f\u0131rt\u0131c\u0131 bir \u015fekilde, monolitin T-\u015fekli, insan formunu betimler. Dikilita\u015f\u0131n \u015faft\u0131 g\u00f6vdeyi, \u201cT\u201dnin \u00fcst k\u0131sm\u0131 kafay\u0131 temsil eder. Bu yorum al\u00e7ak kabartma \u015feklinde ta\u015fa i\u015flenmi\u015f kollar (ta\u015f\u0131n geni\u015f yan y\u00fcz\u00fcnde farkedilir), giysi detaylar\u0131 ve v\u00fccut s\u00fcsleri ile vurgulanm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r: \u00d6rne\u011fin, s\u00fctunun ba\u015f k\u0131sm\u0131n\u0131n alt\u0131nda g\u00f6r\u00fcnen hilal ve daire, muhtemelen bir kolyeyi tasvir eder.<\/p>

Ke\u015ffedildi\u011fi s\u0131rada, G\u00f6bekli Tepe’deki buluntular, tarih \u00f6ncesi avc\u0131-toplay\u0131c\u0131 topluluklar i\u00e7in kabul g\u00f6ren t\u00fcm g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015flerin \u00e7ok \u00f6tesine ge\u00e7ti. Ancak arkeolojide s\u0131kl\u0131kla oldu\u011fu gibi, bize cevaplardan \u00e7ok daha fazla soru sundu. 2018 y\u0131l\u0131nda UNESCO D\u00fcnya Miras\u0131 Listesi’ne al\u0131nan G\u00f6bekli Tepe’deki ara\u015ft\u0131rmam\u0131z, DFG\u2019nin (Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) uzun vadeli proje sponsorlu\u01e7unda \u0130stanbul \u00dcniversitesi ve \u015eanl\u0131urfa M\u00fczesi i\u015fbirli\u011fiyle y\u00fcr\u00fct\u00fclmektedir.<\/p>
