The Photo of the Month: Today, if you move along the coast of the Marmara Sea by leaving the whistles of the ferries and the cries of seagulls behind, you will pass through a landscape that has astonished all travelers who visited the City for centuries; maybe you’re just going to work. Along the coast are many palaces to see, such as Topkap\u0131 Palace, Dolmabah\u00e7e Palace and \u00c7\u0131ra\u011fan Palace; but one of them has remained in obscurity: the Bukoleon Palace. Having built as a part of The Great Palace of Constantinople on the Marmara Sea walls, the palace could only be accessed by the imperial ships. The Bukoleon palace was partly destroyed due to the construction of railways in the second half of the nineteenth century, which is a symbol of the modernization ambition of the Ottoman Empire, and the urban texture around it swallowed the remaining part extending towards the Hippodrome. Still, inhabitants of the City enjoyed this place for a long time after Byzantium, as can be seen from the boat in the photograph; until the connection between the historical building and the glowing sea was cut by the coastal road built here in 1956. We hope that the archaeological excavation and restoration works which have recently been restarted at the Bukoleon Palace, which was first excavated in 1913 by Theodor Wiegand and Ernest Mamboury, will elevate it to the place it deserves in Istanbul\u2019s landscape and in its cultural heritage and re-include it in the lives of the inhabitants and visitors of Istanbul.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Bizans\u2019\u0131n B\u00fcy\u00fck Saray kompleksinin bir par\u00e7as\u0131 olarak Marmara deniz surlar\u0131 \u00fczerine in\u015fa edilmi\u015f bu saray\u0131n merdivenlerle inilen liman\u0131na\u00a0 sadece imparatorluk gemileri yana\u015fabilirdi. Foto\u011fraftaki sakin sular saray\u0131n duvarlar\u0131na \u00e7arpard\u0131. Saray, Osmanl\u0131\u2019n\u0131n modernle\u015fme ihtiyac\u0131n\u0131n bir sembol\u00fc olan demiryolunun in\u015fas\u0131 s\u0131ras\u0131nda par\u00e7a par\u00e7a y\u0131k\u0131lm\u0131\u015f, zamanla geli\u015fen etraf\u0131ndaki kentsel doku saray\u0131n Hippodrom\u2019a do\u011fru uzanan k\u0131sm\u0131n\u0131 da yutmu\u015ftur. Yine de Istanbullular, foto\u011fraftaki sandaldan da anla\u015f\u0131laca\u011f\u0131 \u00fczere buran\u0131n keyfini Bizans\u2019tan sonra da uzun bir s\u00fcre \u00e7\u0131karm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.
