Our monthly photograph that we have chosen from our archives depicts a street in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Houses with bay windows line the two sides of this street. This picture tells a lot about Ottoman architecture and its destruction. The concrete house at the end of the street is a proof of the architectural transformation. These types of bay windows, which almost covered the streets, worried the Ottoman administration. As a result, the administration would issue regulations about them from time to time. Bay windows were sometimes demolished to widen the streets and regulations limited the size of them, as well, because fires were a constant danger in Istanbul. On occassion, people were prohibited from even placing flower pots in their bay windows. In addition, the Ottoman administration sometimes collected a bay window tax. Fires were not the only danger. Pack animals could also knock them down. In certain periods, bay windows were outright banned.<\/p>

Ornamented bay windows were the most striking part of these houses. Signficantly, they were used by women, whose participation in the public space was limited, as a means to interact with the street. Therefore, bay windows blurred the line between the inside and outside. In the Ottoman period, the outside, specifically the neighborhood, was an extension of the family. This is evidenced by the children playing in the street. Until they were replaced by conrete houses, such wooden houses with big families were a type of microcosm of the neighborhood.<\/p>

Soka\u01e7\u0131n bitimindeki beton, d\u00f6n\u015f\u00fcm\u00fcn kan\u0131t\u0131 gibi foto\u01e7raftaki yerini al\u0131yor. Foto\u01e7rafta g\u00f6r\u00fclen cumbalar, Osmanl\u0131 idarecilerini \u00e7ok u\u01e7ra\u015ft\u0131rm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Ah\u015fap yap\u0131lar\u0131n cephesinden soka\u01e7a do\u01e7ru uzanan ve adeta soka\u01e7\u0131 kapatan cumba denilen bu \u00e7\u0131k\u0131nt\u0131lara \u00e7e\u015fitli zamanlarda farkl\u0131 nedenlerle d\u00fczenlemeler getirilmi\u015ftir. Yang\u0131nlarla ba\u015f\u0131 dertte olan \u015fehirlerin sokaklar\u0131n\u0131n daralmamas\u0131 i\u00e7in soka\u01e7a fazla ta\u015fan cumbalar y\u0131kt\u0131r\u0131lm\u0131\u015f ya da farkl\u0131 tarihlerde \u00e7\u0131kan nizamnamelerle cumbalar\u0131n \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fcleri s\u0131n\u0131rland\u0131r\u0131lm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Hatta \u00e7i\u00e7ek ve saks\u0131 konulmas\u0131n\u0131n yasakland\u0131\u01e7\u0131 zamanlar olmu\u015ftur. Cumba vergisi konmu\u015ftur. \u00c7ok al\u00e7ak cumbalara y\u00fck hayvanlar\u0131 tak\u0131l\u0131p onlar\u0131 yerinden s\u00f6km\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr. T\u00fcm bu sebeplerle cumbalar\u0131n tamamen yasakland\u0131\u01e7\u0131 d\u00f6nemler bile olmu\u015ftur. S\u00fcslemeleriyle yap\u0131n\u0131n en g\u00f6z al\u0131c\u0131 yeri olan cumbalar, kamusal hayata kat\u0131l\u0131m\u0131 s\u0131n\u0131rl\u0131 olan kad\u0131nlar\u0131n sokakla temas edebildi\u01e7i mek\u00e2nlard\u0131r. \u0130\u00e7erisi ve d\u0131\u015far\u0131s\u0131 aras\u0131ndaki s\u0131n\u0131rlar\u0131 belirsizle\u015ftirmi\u015flerdir. Foto\u01e7raftaki soka\u01e7\u0131n tad\u0131n\u0131 \u00e7\u0131karan \u00e7ocuklar\u0131n arkada\u015fl\u0131\u01e7\u0131ndan da anla\u015f\u0131lca\u01e7\u0131 gibi evin d\u0131\u015far\u0131s\u0131; yani mahalle ailenin uzant\u0131s\u0131 gibidir. Kalabal\u0131k ailelerin ya\u015fad\u0131\u01e7\u0131 bu t\u00fcr ah\u015fap evler de bir t\u00fcr mahalle mikrokosmosudur. Taa ki t\u00fcm bunlar, foto\u01e7raf\u0131n arka plan\u0131nda g\u00f6z\u00fcken beton binalara yenilene kadar.<\/p>
