At the centre of the \u201cphoto of the month\u201d we see Osman Hamdi who is looking at us with a painter’s palette in his hand. Osman Hamdi was one of the first generation archaeologists of the Ottoman Empire who was appointed director of the Ottoman Imperial Museum (M\u00fcze-i H\u00fcmayun) after the principal of the Austrian High School, Dr. Philipp Anton Dethier. He gave the Istanbul Archeology Museum its current form and was founder of the first fine arts university in Istanbul, Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi, now Mimar Sinan University. He was also responsible for the introduction of first Ottoman regulations in the field of archeology.<\/p>

This versatile intellectual, one of the most important figures of Ottoman modernity, is also a well-known orientalist painter. In the background of the photograph is the famous painting “Arms Dealer” which he painted two years before his death. It is claimed that the person who sits on the antique ruins is Osman Hamdi himself, and the person who inspects the weapon is his son Edhem. Some say that Osman Hamdi advises his son to abandon the weapons. This is an interpretation in accordance with Osman Hamdi’s metaphorical expression. What is interesting about this painting is that we see Osman Hamdi in modern costume in front of the Oriental image of the East that he created. His painting expresses the unity of orientalism and modernism which are a part of the same reality; one might say that this is who Osman Hamdi was; he was born on 30 December 1842 and we would like to mark the date of his birth with this photo for December.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Osman Hamdi, ar\u015fivimizden se\u00e7ti\u011fimiz \u201eay\u0131n foto\u011fraf\u0131n\u0131n\u201c merkezinden elinde paletle bize bak\u0131yor. Onu tan\u0131tmaya gerek var m\u0131 bilmiyoruz ama; Osman Hamdi, Osmanl\u0131 \u0130mparatorlu\u011fu\u2018nun ilk ku\u015fak arkeologlar\u0131ndan biridir. Avusturya Lisesi m\u00fcd\u00fcr\u00fc Dr. Philipp Anton Dethier\u2019den sonra M\u00fcze-i H\u00fcmayun\u2019un m\u00fcd\u00fcr\u00fc olmu\u015ftur ve m\u00fczeye bug\u00fcnk\u00fc \u015feklini o vermi\u015ftir. Osmanl\u0131 \u2018n\u0131n ilk g\u00fczel sanatlar \u00fcniversitesi Sanay-i Nefise Mektebi\u2018nin (bug\u00fcn Mimar Sinan \u00dcniversitesi) kurucusudur. Haz\u0131rlad\u0131\u011f\u0131 nizamnamelerle arkeolojide ilk yasal d\u00fczenlemeleri yapm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.  <\/p>

Osmanl\u0131 modernitesinin en \u00f6nemli fig\u00fcrlerinden biri olan bu \u00e7ok y\u00f6nl\u00fc ayd\u0131n, ayn\u0131 zamanda tan\u0131nm\u0131\u015f bir oryantalist ressamd\u0131r. Foto\u011fraf\u0131n arka plan\u0131nda \u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fcnden iki y\u0131l \u00f6nce yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 \u00fcnl\u00fc \u201eSilah T\u00fcccar\u0131\u201c tablosu g\u00f6r\u00fclmektedir. Tabloda antik kal\u0131nt\u0131n\u0131n \u00fcst\u00fcnde oturan ki\u015finin Osman Hamdi, ayakta elindeki k\u0131l\u0131c\u0131 inceleyen ki\u015fininse o\u011flu Edhem oldu\u011fu s\u00f6ylenir. Ayn\u0131 g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015fe g\u00f6re; tablonun konusu baban\u0131n o\u011fula silahlar\u0131 b\u0131rakmay\u0131 \u00f6\u011f\u00fctlemesidir. Osman Hamdi\u2019nin metaforik anlat\u0131m\u0131na uygun bir yorum! Bizim i\u00e7in bu foto\u011fraf\u0131 ilgin\u00e7 k\u0131lan ise  Osman Hamdi\u2019yi modern k\u0131yafetleri i\u00e7inde kendi yaratt\u0131\u011f\u0131 do\u011fu imgesi \u00f6n\u00fcnde g\u00f6rmemiz ve tablonun i\u00e7indeki oryantalizm ile tablonun d\u0131\u015f\u0131ndaki modernizmin birlikteli\u01e7idir.
