The Roman sarcophagus in our monthly photo unfortunately no longer exists. According to the testimony of Goltz Pasha who was also involved on the Baghdad Railway Project, the sarcophagus was originally transported on timbers to Bilecik (from a village half an hour away) and then placed beneath this magnificent plane tree. Goltz Pasha stated that the villagers proudly conveyed this event to him. He could not hide his surprise. After all, this account did not fit into the western orientalist image in his head; one which suggested that locals were insensitive to historical artefacts and had no interest in their preservation. According to the records in our archive, the photo was taken most probably by Berggren who worked together with Goltz Pasha documenting the construction of the railway. It is likely that both of them were together at the moment this photo was taken. In the 1930s attempts were made to change the location of the sarcophagus but it fell apart during the transfer. We know that different pieces were preserved in different parts of Bilecik but eventually disappeared. In the Bilecik documentary shot by TRT Channel in the 1970s you can see the front pieces of the sarcophagus laid side by side one final time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ar\u015fivimizden ay\u0131n foto\u011fraf\u0131n\u0131n merkezinde g\u00f6r\u00fclen Roma D\u00f6nemi\u2019ne ait bu g\u00fczel lahit, onu sarmalayan t\u00fcm bu insanlara ra\u011fmen korunamam\u0131\u015f ve gizemli bir \u015fekilde s\u0131rra kadem basm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Ba\u011fdat Demiryolu\u2018nun in\u015fas\u0131n\u0131 denetleyen Goltz Pa\u015fa\u2019n\u0131n \u015fahitli\u011fine g\u00f6re lahit, 1800\u2019l\u00fc y\u0131llar\u0131n sonlar\u0131nda \u00a0yar\u0131m saatlik mesafedeki k\u00f6yden kalaslar\u0131n \u00fczerinde y\u00fcr\u00fct\u00fclerek \u015fehir meydan\u0131ndaki bu g\u00fczel \u00e7\u0131nar\u0131n alt\u0131na getirilmi\u015ftir. Goltz Pa\u015fa, k\u00f6yl\u00fclerin bu hadiseyi ona gururla aktard\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 yazar ve \u015fa\u015fk\u0131nl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 gizleyemez. Ne de olsa kafas\u0131ndaki tarihi eserlere duyars\u0131z do\u011fulu imgesine ters bir durum vard\u0131r burada. Foto\u011frafa bakt\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131zda lahitin etraf\u0131n\u0131 \u00e7eviren insanlar\u0131n ifadeleri Goltz Pa\u015fa\u2019y\u0131 do\u011fruluyor. Ar\u015fivimizdeki kay\u0131tlara g\u00f6re foto\u011fraf, muhtemelen Berggren taraf\u0131ndan \u00e7ekilmi\u015ftir. Berggren\u2019in de Ba\u011fdat Demiryolu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalar\u0131n\u0131 belgelemek \u00fczere Golz Pa\u015fa ile birlikte \u00e7al\u0131\u015ft\u0131\u011f\u0131 bilinmekte. Belki de bu foto\u011fraf\u0131n \u00e7ekildi\u011fi anda ikisi biraradayd\u0131. Bilemiyoruz. \u00a0Lahitin yeri 1930\u2019larda tekrar de\u011fi\u015ftirilmek istenmi\u015f; maalesef ta\u015f\u0131ma s\u0131ras\u0131nda lahit k\u0131r\u0131lm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.
