Our picture of the month from 1957 shows a scenic view over the hill top of Musalla Mezarlik, a hill in the vicinity of the lower city of ancient Pergamon, today\u2019s Bergama. After a long break during World War II and the following years, German archaeologists conducted large scale excavations in order to find the so-called and long sought-after sanctuary of Athena Nikephoros. Their goal was to reestablish the Pergamon excavation with a big bang and bring new attention to the project in hibernation. Be it as it may, we all know that expectations and reality at excavations can differ vastly. In this case, sometimes more than 200 m long, searching trenches brought \u201conly\u201d traces of somewhat Hellenistic and Roman houses to light \u2013 among them the most luxurious ones known until know from Pergamon. Therefore, considered a failure, the Musalla Mezarlik excavations were condemned after only two campaigns. Today the yet unpublished results are seen as missing link in the historical and spatial development of the city of Pergamon. Or to use Erich Boehringer words the \u201cdarned hill\u201d has more to it than it seems on first sight.<\/p>

The Musalla Mezarlik was excavated in the two large scale excavations in 1957 and 1958 by Erich Boehringer and Wolfgang M\u00fcller-Wiener. A small prospecting excavation had been conducted by Harald Hanson in 1938. Today the whole Musalla Mezarlik is covered by the modern city of Bergama.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Bu hikayede, uzunlu\u011fu zaman zaman 200 metreyi bulan a\u00e7malarda Helenistik ve Roma d\u00f6nemlerine ait\u00a0 evlerin izleri a\u00e7\u0131\u011fa \u00e7\u0131kar\u0131lm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Bu evlerin aras\u0131nda Bergama\u2019da \u015fimdiye kadar bulunmu\u015f en l\u00fcks evlerden biri bulunmaktad\u0131r. Yine de beklentileri kar\u015f\u0131lamad\u0131\u011f\u0131 i\u00e7in ba\u015far\u0131s\u0131z olarak kabul edilen Musalla Mezarl\u0131k kaz\u0131lar\u0131 sadece iki sezon devam ettikten sonra kapat\u0131lm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Bug\u00fcn hen\u00fcz yay\u0131nlanmam\u0131\u015f sonu\u00e7lar, Pergamon \u015fehrinin mekansal ve tarihsel geli\u015fiminin kay\u0131p halkas\u0131 olarak\u00a0 kabul ediliyor. Veya Erich Boehringer\u2019in s\u00f6zleriyle \u201clanet olas\u0131 tepede\u201d\u00a0 ilk bak\u0131ld\u0131\u011f\u0131ndan \u00e7ok daha fazla \u015feyler olabilir.<\/p>
