My first job at the Istanbul department of the DAI was related to photography. In 2016, I worked for the Pergamon and Bo\u011fazk\u00f6y excavation archives. Whenever my work allowed and I had time, I took a look at old photos to know the archive better.<\/div>
One day, I saw the name “Sand\u0131kl\u0131” on one of the archival boxes. Sandikli was the place where my family comes from! I was born and raised in Germany. Those days, I only knew Turkey from the summer holidays. We used to spend our summer holidays in Sandikli, which was a small place in Afyonkarahisar at that time. Sand\u0131kl\u0131 was the meeting point of my relatives living abroad. For me, Turkey meant a little bit of Sand\u0131kl\u0131. We tried to do a lot of things during our six-week vacation. The games we played until dark, the well-attended dining tables, the \u201cmercimek b\u00fckmesi\u201d (delicious food with lentils from Afyon) baked in the common oven of the neighborhood…<\/div>
It was as if I was hearing and smelling them all from this box. How did all these fit in this little box? Especially, the memories of my grandmother came up, who was waiting for us every summer, carrying candy for the children in her pockets, and whose voice was still in my ears, saying, “I’m going to fry potato for my guzu (sheep, dialect from Afyon), right away”?<\/div><\/div>
I opened the box and looked at the old photos of Afyon, Sand\u0131kl\u0131.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Enstit\u00fcde ilk i\u015fim foto\u011fraf ile ilgiliydi. 2016 y\u0131l\u0131nda Pergamon ve Bo\u011fazk\u00f6y kaz\u0131 ar\u015fivileri i\u00e7in \u00e7al\u0131\u015ft\u0131m. \u0130\u015fim elverdik\u00e7e ve zaman bulduk\u00e7a ar\u015fivi daha iyi tan\u0131mak i\u00e7in eski foto\u011fraflara bakard\u0131m. Bir g\u00fcn foto\u011fraf kutular\u0131n\u0131n birinde \u201cSand\u0131kl\u0131\u201d yazd\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 g\u00f6rd\u00fcm. Ailemin geldi\u011fi yer! Sa\u015fk\u0131nl\u0131kla ve \u00e7ocuksu bir heyecanla hemen kutuyu elime ald\u0131m; a\u00e7\u0131p foto\u011fraflara bakmaya ba\u015flad\u0131m. Almanya\u2019da do\u011fup b\u00fcy\u00fcd\u00fcm. T\u00fcrkiye\u2019yi sadece yaz tatillerinden tan\u0131yordum. Yaz tatillerimizi Afyonkarahisar’\u0131n o zamanlar k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck bir il\u00e7esi olan Sand\u0131kl\u0131\u2019da ge\u00e7irirdik. Sand\u0131kl\u0131 yurtd\u0131\u015f\u0131nda ya\u015fayan akrabalar\u0131n bulu\u015fma noktas\u0131yd\u0131. Benim i\u00e7in T\u00fcrkiye demek biraz da Sand\u0131kl\u0131 demekti. Alt\u0131 haftal\u0131k tatilimize bir \u00e7ok \u015feyi s\u0131\u011fd\u0131rmaya \u00e7al\u0131\u015f\u0131rd\u0131k. Karanl\u0131k basana dek oynad\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z oyunlar, kalabal\u0131k sofralar, mahallenin ortak kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131 f\u0131r\u0131nda pi\u015fen mercimekli b\u00fckmeler… Sanki hepsini bu elimdeki kutudan duyuyor, kokluyor gibidim. Bunlar\u0131n hepsi bu k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck kutuya nas\u0131l s\u0131\u011fm\u0131\u015ft\u0131? Hele ki her yaz bizi hasretle bekleyen, ceplerinde \u00e7ocuklar i\u00e7in \u015feker ta\u015f\u0131yan, \u201cguzuma kumpir k\u0131zartaca\u011f\u0131m hemmen\u00e7ik\u201d diyen sesi h\u00e2l\u00e2 kulaklar\u0131mda olan anneannemin bu kutuda ne i\u015fi vard\u0131?<\/div><\/div>
