The Atat\u00fcrk Cultural Centre (AKM) on Taksim, Istanbul, looks back on an eventful building history. After 23 years of construction, the complex was finally completed in 1969 according to the plans of the architect Dr. Hayati Tabanl\u0131o\u011flu. The main hall has 1,307 seats for performances by the Turkish State Theatre and the State Opera Ballet. There is also a “concert hall” with 502 seats, as well as an exhibition hall covering 1,200 m\u00b2, and other cultural facilities. The AKM was T\u00fcrkiye’s first multifunctional building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1970, a year after its inauguration, the building burned down completely and was subsequently redesigned and renovated by Tabanl\u0131o\u011flu. Discussions about a new AKM building began in 2005, and it was finally opened to the public in 2021. This lecture will highlight the history of the AKM, from the first ideas and concepts to the current building and its points of reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
