{"id":4252,"date":"2017-02-01T13:36:17","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T11:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tepetelegrams.wordpress.com\/?p=4252"},"modified":"2019-02-25T15:03:45","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T14:03:45","slug":"national-geographic-magazine-on-the-history-and-social-role-of-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dainst.blog\/the-tepe-telegrams\/2017\/02\/01\/national-geographic-magazine-on-the-history-and-social-role-of-alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"National Geographic Magazine: On the History and Social Role of Alcohol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The cover story of <strong>National Geographic<\/strong> Magazine&#8217;s [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/\">external link<\/a>] February issue is an interesting culture-historical excursus on the social and ritual\u00a0role\u00a0of alcohol from early cultures\u00a0to modern drinking habits, the technical processes of producing alcoholic beverages, and the challenges to actually track down and verify these in the archaeological record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Titled <strong>&#8220;Our 9,000-Year Love Affair With Booze&#8221;<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/2017\/02\/alcohol-discovery-addiction-booze-human-culture\/\">external link<\/a>], the text by author <em>Andrew Curry<\/em> (with photos by <em>Brian Finke<\/em>) follows the work of <em>Martin Zarnkow<\/em> for instance, a scientist at TUZ Munich&#8217;s Weihenstephan research center for brewing and food-grade.\u00a0We also had the pleasure to work together with him when he was analysing a couple of samples\u00a0coming from large stationary stone vessels at G\u00f6bekli Tepe. While still preliminary and inconclusive, these analyses initially hinted at the likely brewing &#8211; and consumption &#8211; of beer-like beverages in the context of large gatherings which seem to have taken place at Neolithic G\u00f6bekli Tepe (read more about this observation <a href=\"\/\/dainst.blog\/the-tepe-telegrams\/2016\/04\/24\/out-for-a-beer-at-the-dawn-of-agriculture\/\">here<\/a>).
