It is known from the residents of that area <\/strong>that they live by a sect or clan system, and they have a leader called sheikh who takes care of those who visit them and meets their need. They are known for their generosity and hospitality. The most famous sheikh of the clan was Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, the figurehead of the revolution in that region. My story begins with a young man from the city of Damascus. He loved a girl in his neighbourhood that loved him back. That young man advanced to marry that girl, but the girl\u2019s family rejected that young man permanently. So one day, the young man fled together with that girl early in the morning, without the knowledge of her family, and headed to the city As-Suwayda. Upon their arrival, they took refuge in Sultan Pasha Al-Atrash’s house, which he kept for houseguests in order to meet their needs.<\/p>

This house had its own characteristics, as, in addition to its protection by the clan that inhabited the region, it was protected by the state as well; it was called the community\u2019s mind. After the young man took refuge in this house, he went to the sheikh, who received him, and promised him security and safety without anyone touching him until all his affairs would be sorted and his problems would be solved. The young man asked them to help finding work, in order not to be a burden for them. He mastered electrical work, in order to work and earn his living with the sweat of his forehead, so that his life would be more stable.<\/p>

The clan sheikh loved that young man, because he found honesty and good manners in him, so he decided to help. The sheikh of the clan travelled to Damascus, visited the family of the girl, and reconciled them all. Then that young man was greatly impressed by the people of that region, not only for their generosity, but also for their support of him and for solving his problem. The young man decided to remain in the region and actually settled in the city that he did not leave again. My father also worked in electrical work, in the same shop where that young man worked. He shared his story and they became close friends. We also were not native residents of the area. We are Sunnis, and they are Druze, but I have never felt any difference between us. They have many good qualities, from generosity over accepting strangers to respecting their elders very much; this is their mindset.<\/p>

THE MOSAIC OF ORPHEUS<\/strong><\/p>

This magnificent and calm mosaic reminds me of the beauty of the classic myth; in my mind, I see a beautiful incident, which we experienced during our third year of study at the Department of Archaeology. We were waiting for the arrival of Dr. Mufid Raef Al-Abed for the first lecture on the subject of classical antiquities. We saw him coming from afar, dragging behind him his suitcase. He was coming from Damascus. Entering the lecture hall, he created a certain atmosphere. Complete silence met him when he started his lecture. He was explaining the legend of ‘raising the dome of the sky’, gesturing wildly to attract our attention. This he did to such an extent that my colleague Abdul Qadir, sitting next to me, could not resist to applaud the doctor when he had finished his explanations, earning a smile of gratitude from the doctor. He made us feel that monuments are not just old buildings made of old materials and mosaics with a certain dimension, but that they are pieces of art that flirt with our feelings, to make us tremble and to think about the artist who created it – an artist who might never have imagined that someone will stand in front of his creation hundreds of years later with great respect and appreciation.<\/p>

These images have brought back my memories of ‘oriental’ shops. <\/strong>More than ten years ago, during our studies at the Department of Archaeology, we took part in archaeological excursions to different regions of Syria. On one of our trips, my friends and I entered one of the shops which were selling antiques and some traditional handicrafts. It was the first time I visited that area.<\/p>

I saw some traditional jewellery, beautifully shaped and well-crafted, so we asked the seller about its price. He surprised us by giving us the price in US dollars, and it was of course a high price compared to our local currency. So we told him, smiling, that we were citizens of the country and not tourists. We left him laughing and continued walking in the market, satisfied with viewing the exhibits without asking about their prices.<\/p>

Those days were very beautiful, and it is difficult for us to wish to return; but they will remain in our memories and we will remember them in beautiful pieces of memory such as this image.<\/p>

I visited the city <\/strong>of As-Suwayda for the first time in 1998, when I was 18 years old, while I was going to visit a relative who had moved and settled there, accompanied by my father. I will never forget this city; it was the most beautiful vacation I spent in my life. The simplicity of living and generosity, mixed with the magic of nature. I made many friends during this vacation. I would wake up early in the morning to eat breakfast, go out to the surrounding areas with my new friends, walk long distances, and enjoy seeing the old and historical buildings. I would climb one of them and sit on its roof to enjoy the views that have remained in my imagination until now. We used to walk and walk, we talked and we raced over and over again, and we stood to contemplate the beauty of the lush black stones of thousands of years.<\/p>

I wonder … What is happening to my friends now? .. And what happened to those ancient buildings that have survived for generations and generations?<\/p>
