In spring times, <\/strong>when the weather became beautiful, my friends and I started to drop out of our morning classes at the university to wander between the lanes of the old city and its alleys, like the people of the ancient city of Old Shaam.<\/p>

We started our tour from Bab Touma to reach Al-Qaymariya, where our favourite bakery was located. Then we went to one of the small cafes to drink our morning coffee and listen to Fayrouz’s songs. Between the alleys, we stopped to look at the features of the city and considered details we had not seen in our previous tour. On every tour, we visited one of the landmarks of the city. I thought I knew most of its landmarks. Funnly, during the past years, I discovered that I knew very little about this beautiful city and that it deserved much more visits from me to really get to know it.<\/p>

One of the most accustomed places to visit was Khan Asm Pasha. At that time,\u00a0 I worked with my friends to organize an exhibition there with my university teacher, and we would love to return to that place to gather our memories. The most beautiful times for wandering around the city is the early morning and the evening, before the shops open and after they close. In these hours you feel that the city attracts you to it with its details and calmness. I did not care about dates and details before the war, but I lived \u201cthe story of my life\u201d in it. The most beautiful prayer is the evening prayer in the Umayyad Mosque. In its \u2018eternal\u2019 courtyard, you would feel a strange calm during the day, and you would feel like you were alone in the evening hours. I used to enjoy the place\u2019s patience at those hours, to sit and bid farewell to the day you spent. Often after our morning tour it took time for us to discover that the day had passed already, while we were photographing and shopping in the city’s streets…<\/p>

I visited this region repeatedly <\/strong>because I was looking for motives to draw. There are some centres selling all kinds of items and new professions in it, while the workshops and big dealers are concentrated at the beginning of the market at the entrance after passing the market area of Al-Hariqah.<\/p>

The wall extends from the southern door of the Umayyad Mosque in the Al-Maskiyya region to the Al-Nawfara area.<\/p>

I was 22 years old at that time, and I had begun to get acquainted with the history of Damascus from the books of historians. Engineering became part of my training in order to finish university studies, and at that time in the mid-nineties, the Damascene restaurants spread quickly in ancient houses.\u00a0 Archaeology had an important role in the formation of my love for these Arab homes and hidden artefacts that made you feel calm and comfortable, as you moved between the shade of the iwan and the bright sunlight of the courtyard.<\/p>

It happened that a new restaurant had opened, opposite the western area from the southern wall of the Umayyad Mosque. I spoke to the owner about how the designer of the Umayyad Mosque excelled in designing the long wall as two wings of an eagle with a dome in the middle that forms the head of the eagle.<\/p>

It was one of the most beautiful evening parties in a wonderful spring atmosphere, full of fragrant heritage, I still sniff it whenever I see a picture that refreshes my memories of that area full of contradictions, movement and congestion, spirituality, monuments, and many memories.<\/p>

Thank you for this opportunity, which revived deep feelings for the most beautiful stage of my youth.<\/p>

When I remember the Umayyad Mosque in the city of Damascus <\/strong>(which is one of the most important historical monuments of the city of Damascus and its residents), my memory returns to the month of Ramadan. In every Islamic country, people would follow specific customs during Ramadan; in the city of Damascus and the Umayyad Mosque in particular, there were customs that might not be found in other mosques.<\/p>

To start with, I remember well the period of Suhoor at the Umayyad Mosque (the period that precedes the Fajr azan), when I went to the Umayyad Mosque on some nights of Ramadan with my brothers, waiting for Fajr prayer. And I recall that a distinctive atmosphere from the calm night of peace that dwelled in the courtyard of the mosque sent tranquillity and reassurance to our souls. Inside the campus of the mosque, we were listening to recitation of blessed verses from the Holy Quran followed by some Islamic songs, which, in general, sung about about the reception of Ramadan. Recalling the imminent end of the month and preparing for its goodbye was linked to a group of chants with a traditional uniform that changed every day during the month of Ramadan. This habit is still followed until the present day in the whole month of Ramadan.<\/p>

I will also mention the call to prayer in the Umayyad Mosque (which is the time for breaking the fast), the time for Maghrib and the start of eating breakfast. This is linked to the memory of every fasting person who breaks the fast when hearing that special tune.<\/p>

One very cold day,<\/em><\/strong> I escaped from school – I was in elementary school at that time \u2013 and went to Suq Hamidiyeh, then I walked through the narrow alleys, the historical Damascus lanes. It gave me a feeling of warmth and security.<\/p>

When I got tired, I sat next to a very old door, I thought the house was deserted, but suddenly the door opened and a man came out from the inside. He asked me: “Why are you sitting here?”, and I answered him that I was afraid, that I was an orphan and had lost my way, and that I wanted nothing but a glass of water.<\/p>

He took me inside his house. How beautiful that house was! I will never forget it for the rest of my life – smelling of bitter orange, lemon fragrant, and vineyard grape.<\/p>

He introduced me to his children and I had a good time with them.<\/p>

One day a movie called \u201cJamr’s Revenge\u201d was announced, and I loved attending that movie because it attracted me with its announcement. So I convinced my friends to go to the cinema and attend the movie.<\/p>

After watching the fun … and when we got out of the cinema my friends and I, on our way home, got a feeling of revenge against the people who wronged us \u2013 just as in the movie. On our return to our neighbourhood, we saw one of the people we thought had wronged us one day. We hit him, but he was strong … The problem did not end until our families came by and we were punished in front of them.<\/p>

It always comes to mind, <\/strong>I saw handcrafted copper kitchenware for the first time in my life during the days of work at the Manakhliya market. How patient were artisans to produce these precious pieces?<\/p>

The sound of the hammers heaping on copper throughout the market was somewhat annoying at first, but as soon as you entered any store, you would feel the harmony between those sounds and the hand that stroke copper. In that market, craftsmen manufactured two massive copper chandeliers, which were fixed to the ceiling of the market. These were the largest chandeliers I had seen until then. After that tour, I remember entering a small store, toasting sandwiches and creating something new, called a pizza sandwich, that had pizza ingredients with Arabic bread and went in a toaster instead of the oven, and it was delicious.<\/p>

The statue of Salah al-Din<\/strong><\/p>

I first saw this statue when I was seven years old, on my first visit to the city of Damascus. I was a resident of Damascus’ countryside. It was the habit of the people of the countryside to first go to the Hamidiyeh market when visiting the city of Damascus.<\/p>

I was with my father and we went to the Al-Hamidiya market to buy some things and watch the market. I really enjoyed this tour so much that going to those markets became a habit for me, walking in the alleys and old Damascus lanes. At the entrance to the Al Hamidiyeh market stands this statue of Salah al-Din. I passed by it – every visit – to stand and meditate, remembering the details of my first visit – when I was young. I am still attracted by this wonderful place. On my first visit, we went to the Umayyad Mosque, we prayed there, and then we went to the well-known ice cream seller Bakdash. We bought ice cream there, and we rushed back to walk through the Hamidiyeh market. When we got to that statue the ice cream had melted, and I had stained my clothes unintentionally. My father scolded me a lot, but the delicious ice cream was more important to me. That habit continued for me until I became a young man.<\/p>

My friends and I used to visit old Damascus again and again. Our tour began as soon as we got off the transportation at Bab Touma, through the alleys of Damascus and its old lanes until we reached the Umayyad Mosque, and the tour could not continue without eating the ice cream from the same shop: Walking through the Hamidiyeh market, exiting, and then standing in front of the same statue. I always remembered the first time when I was seven years old. Sometimes I asked myself how many people have the same feeling as me looking at this statue. Does it cause that feeling in the new generation?<\/p>

I don’t know any general information about that statue. When was it created? Who created it? And why was it put here?<\/p>

But I yearn to stand before it, and look at it, and observe the people who look at its finest details like me.<\/p>

When I saw this picture <\/strong>of Salahuddin Al Ayoubi’s statue, my memory returned to the most beautiful days of my life when I was a student at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Damascus in 2005. I often liked to walk home from the College of Architecture, which was located near the Umayyad Square. I passed through the Faculty of Ancient Law, and then Al-Halbouni area, and then Al-Nasr Street, which ended at the entrance to the Hamidiyeh market, which I used to enter sometimes. At other times, I turned left in order to stand in front of the statue of Salah al-Din, standing in front of the historic walls of Damascus Citadel. That statue reminded me of many stories and history I had been reading. Next, to complete my journey along the walls of the Citadel, I entered the ancient city of Damascus from one of the Al-Hamidiyeh branches, alongside the Great Umayyad Mosque.<\/p>

I continued my way through the long market and left the old city from one of its historical gates – Bab Al-Sagheer to reach Asaker Street, where my house was.<\/p>

Even though I had to walk for an hour after a tiring school day, I loved this route as it was like a journey in which time passed through the oldest inhabited capital in history and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Damascus.<\/p>
