Day 13 Prehistoric silver mining on Ibiza

The mining district of s’Argentera on Ibiza is one of the largest in the Balearic Islands, ranking alongside the lead and silver ore deposits of Bunyola on Mallorca and the copper deposits on Menorca.

The extraction of silver ore is being studied as part of a DAI Madrid project on mining on Ibiza in ancient times. It’s the first comprehensive study in the investigation of pre-Roman ore mining and trading on Ibiza. Mining continues in the region today. This makes research very difficult, as pre-Roman features have largely been obliterated. It has nevertheless been possible to document and examine a number of mining passages as well as extraction using fire dating from pre-Roman times.
