The Commission for Archaeology of non-European Cultures (KAAK) in Bonn of the German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, DAI) is seeking to recruit a
Research assistant (m/f/d)

for the German Research Foundation (DFG) funded Coordination project of the Priority Program (SPP) 2143 “Entangled Africa”, starting June 1st, 2021. The post is appointed with a maximum of 18.5 hours per week for a limited period until July 31st, 2022. Depending on the availability of funds, an extension of the post is envisaged, provided that the personal and material requirements are met.
A gross salary of Euro 21.00 per hour will be paid. The position is limited in time according to § 2.2 of the German Act on Temporary Employment Contracts in Science (WissZeitVG). The place of employment is Bonn/Germany.
The DAI is a federal institution operating under the auspices of the Federal Foreign Office and conducts research in the field of archaeology and its neighboring disciplines. With 20 locations in Germany and abroad, the DAI is the largest non-university research institution in the field of archaeology and ancient studies in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The research assistantship serves the acquisition of competences and practical training in the fields of public relations, data curation and event organization, especially in the SPP project.
Your profile and qualifications
Candidates must have
- an excellent Master’s degree from a university in the field of archaeology or a related discipline; the university degree may not be more than six years old on the date of recruitment; applicants must not hold a doctorate.
- an enrollment in a doctoral program or the existence of a PhD concept on an archaeological or ancient history topic (evidenced by a concept paper).
In addition, candidates should have
- Knowledge in dealing with scientific texts
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications as well as the willingness and ability to quickly familiarize oneself with relevant IT applications in the field of electronic publishing and databases (e.g. typesetting and image editing programs)
- Basic experience with data curation and research work
- Basic experience in event organization (e.g. conferences, exhibitions)
- Independent, team-oriented and committed working style
The office space at the KAAK is available beyond the regular weekly working hours for further scientific training and preferably for the completion of the PhD dissertation.
