Evening Lecture: WILHELM DÖRPFELD, EIN PIONIER DER ARCHÄOLOGISCHEN DENKMALPFLEGE

Our lecture series continues! On Thursday 13 March 2025, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Otten, who will talk about ‘Wilhelm Dörpfeld, ein Pionier der archäologischen Bauforschung’.

In the late 19th century, archaeological building research, archaeological monument conservation and the didactic conservation of archaeological sites underwent fundamental changes. A holistic understanding of the archaeological site as a monument to be protected was developed, as were new standards of excavation and documentation as a basis for archaeological building research. The architect Wilhelm Dörpfeld was one of the pioneers of archaeological heritage conservation and a charismatic personality in every respect. His work continues to influence archaeology, conservation and architectural research to this day.

The focus of the lecture is not on Wilhelm Dörpfeld’s impressive scientific oeuvre and research results, but on his methodological and conceptual approaches to archaeological building research and monument conservation. His achievements in this field were already regarded by his contemporaries as advanced and progressive, he set standards and was a role model for many other undertakings of his time. The lecture will highlight the most important stages of Dörpfeld’s excavations, from Olympia to Troy, Athens, Pergamon, Corfu and Leukas. (Türkçe Özet)

The hybrid event will be held in German. For physical participation, please register in advance by 15.00 on the day of the lecture.
