Sehr pittoresk hat sich die Besuchergruppe um Wilhelm Dörpfeld (stehend links des Tores) um das Löwentor in Mykene aufgestellt. Von dem oft abgebildeten Foto kursiert die Meinung, auch Heinrich Schliemann stünde oben rechts auf dem Tor. Er war zum Aufnahmezeitpunkt allerdings bereits verstorben. Bei näherer Betrachtung lassen sich aber andere Details rekonstruieren: Decken, Gläser, Brotkorb, Messer und eine Kanne vor, auf und zwischen den Steinblöcken deuten auf ein gemeinsames Picknick in den Ruinen hin. Im Vordergrund links blühen Anemonen und rechts hat es sich ein Hund im kühlen Schatten gemütlich gemacht. Der Ausflug fand vermutlich an einem sonnigen, warmen Frühlingstag statt.
#ThrowbackThursday: Visitors in Mycene
The visitors, who have arranged themselves so picturesquely around the Lion Gate at Mycenae, include archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld (standing left of the gate). It is sometimes claimed that this often reproduced photograph also shows Heinrich Schliemann – standing top right on the gate – but in fact he was already dead when the photo was taken. Close inspection reveals other details: blankets, glasses, bread basket, knife and flask on, among and in front of the boulders suggest a picnic amid the ruins. In the foreground, anemones are in flower on the left and to the right a dog has made itself comfortable in the shade. The excursion presumably took place on a warm, sunny spring day.
